A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was to book lodging when I arrived, but once I got there, a big convention was in town and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate all night. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and began walking near the casino, believing it was a place to spend those hours somewhere that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
I must have looked lost because a female student saw me wandering around the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and right away she said I could crash on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.
In retrospect, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, I am astonished she did that – and remain incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of generosity. I hope the universe has returned her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
