Adult Swim's Top New Show of 2025 Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
