Explosion Takes Three Police Officers Amid Property Removal Action in the Verona Area
Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the house near the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and another man who escaped following the explosion was apprehended shortly later. All three have been taken to the hospital.
The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene displayed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.
Financial Context
The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the property was facing an eviction order due to debts accrued by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to reporters.
A propane tank had been set off, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the interior minister stated.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.
According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The official thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
