American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports said flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.
