Jennifer Lawrence Says Speaking About Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ That’s Ripping the Country Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she finds it inappropriate appropriate to comment publicly against the Trump administration, fearing it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and further divisions within the country.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Lawrence
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner commented, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was running around without clear direction. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, celebrities fail to influence at all on voter decisions.”
The actor went on, “What’s the point? I’m just sharing my opinion on a matter that’s going to add fuel to a fire dividing the country apart.”
Shifting Views
The actress has spoken candidly about supporting conservative and liberal candidates in past elections. Brought up by Republican parents in her home state, she supported the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the Democrats and stating she realized during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was voting against her own rights as a female citizen.
Previous Comments
Earlier in her career, she stated that Trump winning the presidency might signal “a disaster” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she gave her endorsement to Vice President Harris, “since I think she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will make every effort to protect women’s health rights.”
Industry Position
Jennifer Lawrence was joined by most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Trump as a returning figure, but the minimal impact stars have over the electoral decisions was highlighted by Trump’s victory.
“Another four years feels different,” commented she of his leadership. “As he said what he was going to do. We understood his record for four years. He was explicit. And that’s what we chose.”
New Release
Jennifer Lawrence is highlighting her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she stars as a young mom who deals with her emotional state in the countryside. Speaking at a interview session for the project in Venice, Lawrence spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s happening is no less than a genocide and it’s horrible.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the hostility in the discussions of U.S. political debates right now and how that is going to be normalised to the kids now. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”
She sought to redirect anger about the situation to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on the people in charge,” she remarked, which was interpreted as a nod to the then-recent pledge supported by more than 4,000 entertainment industry figures to refuse engagement with certain cultural organizations.
Personal Connections
The actor, who received an Academy Award early in her career for her performance in her breakout movie, is receiving praise for her work in the new film. Even though Ramsay has disputed the narrative being seen as one of maternal mental health issues and psychosis, the actress shared that she identified with elements of her film narrative after the arrival of her second son, shortly after shooting ended.
“I felt anxiety regarding my baby,” she commented, “just picturing every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was trying. I was seeing a therapist, but I started taking a medication called that medicine and I took it for two weeks and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
The actor also mentioned regarding the empowering aspect of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was expecting and unable to exercise.
“It’s refreshing,” she remarked, about having to cast off vanity. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, What separates me between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
