Outrage Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Rebuke
Personalities from both sides of the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a disgusting and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks
A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his party to defend the comments.
Reiner's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of another individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
