Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the initial names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the process of hiring a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
