Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
