Suspected Harasser Asked: 'Yet What If I Could Be Madeleine?'
A female charged with harassing Kate McCann allegedly deposited her a voicemail message which questioned: "what if I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, twenty-four, who court testimony revealed has repeatedly claimed she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are facing charges accused with harassing Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court learned communication data and data recovered from phones documented Ms Wandelt consistently requesting Madeleine's mother for a genetic test over the past two years.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - when she was three years old during a family holiday in Portugal - is among the most widely reported investigations and remains unsolved.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
One voicemail, presented in court, recorded Ms Wandelt saying: "I understand I'm fat and plain like Madeleine was, but I know what I know."
While one recording of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's voicemail said: "Imagine there is a small chance that I'm her? Then what? Wouldn't that be significant for you?"
"I don't want money, I maintain a existence here in Poland, I only wish to understand," she added.
The panel was told that through emails, mobile messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, transmitted early photographs to her phone in a bid to demonstrate a similarity to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "memories" from a childhood with the McCanns.
The investigator, an investigator with the police force who collated the information, advised the court there "showed no any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also reached out to family friends of the McCanns, according to the communication logs.
On October 9th, 2024, Mr McCann responded to a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "incorrect contact information."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a voicemail on Mrs McCann's recording stating "I won't give up and I intend to demonstrate my claim."
The court was informed Mrs Spragg struck up a relationship via internet with Ms Wandelt prior to assisting her on a trip to the McCanns' property in that area in December 2024.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had contacted via communication app to Mrs McCann to express the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be considered genuine in the time leading up to the appearance to that location, that area, in that winter.
The court heard message exchanges between the two accused, in that autumn, discussing trying to get Mrs McCann's genetic material from her garbage or from utensils at a eating establishment.
"We must make a stand," Mrs Spragg advised Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the appearance to their residence, Mrs Spragg dispatched a text which said: "We are positioned near the McCanns' house with our vehicle dark similar to private investigators. I wanted to accomplish this with another person I never thought I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The case proceeds.
