The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Formal Protests by Iran and Egypt
Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and External Festivities
Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities beyond the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Legal Background of Objections
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Symbols
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
- This special fixture was an idea created to highlight Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
- An artistic competition has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
- Organizers have pledged to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the city during the 48-team competition.
The region is home to a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” the statement concluded.
