The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to independently develop this new product as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company
The recent development deepens the continuing tension between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated that he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
