During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a discovery that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is known about Brenner's work, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
