The Reze Arc Movie Dominates Domestic Cinema Earnings in First Weekend

Has Sony done it again? Following the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million mark globally, hitting a global total of $108 million in its opening frame. The film outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in movie houses, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Impressive Domestic and Global Results

The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It earned over $18 million in North America after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Globally, the animated by MAPPA movie grossed nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million under Sony ($43.1M overseas, $18.2 million domestic). Official totals are still pending from Sony its final earnings figure.

Benchmarks to Past Anime Hits

Specialist agency a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, contrasting the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in 2022 and started with a similar $18M in the U.S.. The new film's debut weekend aligns with that standard, while its $108 million global gross currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's $166.6M overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible this Chainsaw Man film will earn the numbers of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a huge win for Sony.

Marketing Campaigns Drive Box Office Dominance

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged community involvement to drive their dominance at the cinema for anime films. The movie's advertising push kicked off at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a major presence at New York Comic Con featuring never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and popular figures too after the final day of the gathering.

What’s Next

2025 is a big year for Japanese animation, and for the studio, which has an additional feature-length anime debuting in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
