What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
