Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase future success.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
